COOGEE baths

The Ross Jones Memorial pool with its iconic concrete battlements is nestled beneath the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club at the southern end of Sydney's famous Coogee Beach. The pool was built in 1947 and named after Roscoe Jones, an alderman on the Randwick Council between 1934-37. Jones had a close association with the surf club that stands above it and a commemorative plaque bearing his name adorns a rock face near the stairs to the pool.

A haven for summer sun-lovers soaking up the rays and cool salt water, the pool is often awash with people from sun-up to sun-down. Summer living at its absolute best. But I feel the pool shares a different and perhaps more enticing mood in the cooler times of the year. Times when only the die hard bathers take a dip in the frigid water and the beach lays bare of bronzed Aussies and sunburnt backpackers.

The skies cloud over, the water turns a steel blue-grey and the battlements remind me of some ancient fortress. A protector of the pool and the water so many of us will enjoy when Sydney is at her best again.
