MAHON pool

The mighty Mahon Pool is another highly photogenic pool in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. It has a natural and somewhat rugged appearance, looking almost as if it has existed as is for millennia, and someone has recently put a chain fence around it. I guess in some ways this is kind of true.

Mahon pool was constructed in 1932 and is located north of Maroubra Beach at the base of Jack Vanny Reserve. The pool is surrounded by exposed rock outcrops which, in addition to the cliffs above, make for a spectacular photographic venue. A venue I have visited repeatedly for near on five years.

Coogee aside, Mahon pool is my local. During the summer months I am regularly poolside catching a sunrise on film, then back again in the late afternoon for an end of day dip. Both equally enticing and equally rewarding.

Mahon Pool may not have the refinement or sophistication of a Bondi or Bronte Baths, but it certainly has a character and prestige all of its own. Character that is formed by the locals and visitors that frequent the place. A character shaped by the rugged landscape in which Mahon Pool sits. An unpretentious, take me as I am pool that I find so very appealing.
